Knife-Wielding Man Shot By Police In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A man is expected to survive after being shot by police in Brooklyn Wednesday.

The shooting took place around 11 a.m. at Susan Laundromat on Church Street and Remsen Avenue in the Remsen Village section.

"I heard three gunshots and I was just flabbergasted about the situation, and I didn't even know what to do," one witness, Mario Archibald, told CBS2's Dave Carlin.

Police were responding to several 911 calls of a man with a knife at the location. Some callers also said the man had a gun.

Responding officers encountered 23-year-old Davonte Pressly and repeatedly demanded he drop the knife, according to the NYPD.

"The officers repeatedly ordered the armed male to drop the knife. At which time, the male lunged towards the officers with the knife still in his hand," Chief of Patrol Terry Monahan said.

One officer opened fire, hitting Pressley three times in the torso.

The suspect was rushed to Brookdale Hospital in critical condition, police said.

The officer who fired his weapon was also taken to the hospital to be treated for ringing in his ears, police said.

"Use a Taser at least. I don't get that, I don't like that," East Flatbush resident Nicole Bernard, said.

The shooting happened about a week after an NYPD sergeant fatally shot Deborah Danner in her Bronx apartment. In that case, concerned neighbors called police and Danner, who was diagnosed with mental illness, had armed herself with a bat.

Now comes another shooting while the police are under scrutiny.

Monahan said they're looking into whether mental illness was a factor, 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported.
