1010 WINS 9/11 Series: Joining The Bucket Brigade Out Of Love
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- One bright moment after the 9/11 attacks was the outpouring of support for those working day after day on what was known as "The Pile."
1010 WINS reporter Sonia Rincon spoke with Andy Sullivan, a construction worker who will always be grateful for that support.
Sullivan happened to be just outside the World Trade Center that tragic day and witnessed both strikes on the towers.
He said it looked like something out of an action movie.
"But then we started to see the aftermath - the shards of glass coming down, people waving their shirts for help - and all of a sudden everything became very real," Sullivan said.

Then he realized one of his crew members was inside one of the towers.
"We ended up getting up there and we got him," Sullivan said. "He was real happy to see us."
The unforgettable images made it clear to Sullivan that good and evil exist in this world.
"There is evil out there and you need to fight against it," he says.
Sullivan ended up joining the bucket brigade after learning the first girl he ever loved worked for Cantor Fitzgerald.
"She had a smile that could light the city, when she got into a room you were just drawn to her," Sullivan said. "My crazy thinking was that I was going to find her."
Her remains were found months later.
Sullivan said while working the bucket brigade he found comfort in the public support.
"We were walking all day on the bucket brigades and walking down the West Side Highway, covered in ash that was made up of god knows what," he recalls. "People were running up to you, wiping your forehead, giving you clothes, saying 'We love you, thank you so much.'"
"That was America, that's when there was no liberals, no conservatives it was just Americans," Sullivan said. "There was a magic moment in our country's history."
He hopes the anniversary will remind the nation of that sense of unity.
