Did you hear tornado sirens in Minnesota Thursday afternoon? Here's why.

Minnesotans may be wondering why they're hearing tornado sirens on Thursday. It's because of Severe Weather Awareness Week. 

As part of the weather week, two statewide tornado drills are scheduled. Outdoor warning sirens sounded at 1:45 p.m. and once again at 6:45 p.m. 

State officials say the first drill is for institutions and businesses, while the evening drill is for second-shift workers and families. 

Severe Weather Awareness Week is designed to educate and remind Minnesotans about threats from severe weather and how to avoid them. That includes planning for severe weather, including having an emergency preparedness kit.

4 things you need to know about tornadoes in Minnesota

  1. On average, nearly 50 tornadoes hit Minnesota each year. One-third of those occur in June, with July, August and May as runners-up. Though the number is smaller in Wisconsin, twisters are still a threat there — there are about 23 in an average year.
  2. Know your safe space. When a tornado warning is issued, head to the basement if you have one. If not, put as many walls between you and the storm as possible — head to an interior room or closet on the lowest level of a sturdy structure away from windows. Cover your head and remember to bring shoes to protect your feet after the storm. And always practice with drills to keep the information fresh.
  3. Never try to outdrive a tornado. They can move erratically and shift direction at any time. You'll want to find a sturdy shelter either to the left or right of the storm's track. And never hide under an overpass. They can accelerate the wind, making it even more dangerous.
  4. Tragically, many injuries happen after a storm, during clean-up. Steer clear of any downed power lines since they could still be charged. Check your utilities for any leaks. Make sure you're wearing proper safety gear, and take breaks to limit the stress on your heart and body.
