A Dallas community leader and SMU alumnus, Omar Salazar, will be deported after losing his immigration case Wednesday night, following seven months in ICE detention. Instead, Salazar is proceeding with voluntary departure, which must occur within 60 days. Because he is married to a U.S. citizen, he will be eligible to apply to reenter the country, though his attorney said that process could take three to six years.
