Top U.S. and Chinese diplomats to meet in Alaska

Next week the U.S. and China will hold their first senior-level talks since President Biden took office. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan will meet Beijing's diplomats in Alaska on March 18. Expert discusses COVID-19 origins, vaccine

A Wall Street Journal report says lab researchers in Wuhan, China, sought hospital care for "symptoms consistent with both COVID-19 and common seasonal illness" in November 2019, a month before the first case of coronavirus was officially confirmed there. Dr. Jessica Justman, senior technical director at ICAP and associate professor of medicine in epidemiology at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, joins "Red and Blue" anchor Elaine Quijano with her reaction, plus insights into reports of heart problems in a small number of vaccinated young adults.

Countries fear second coronavirus wave

Wuhan, where the coronavirus pandemic first began, is testing all 11 million residents after reporting six new cases over the weekend. The city lifted its 76-day lockdown in April. In South Korea’s capital of Seoul, over 2,000 bars and clubs were closed after a new cluster of COVID-19 cases were traced to the city’s entertainment district. Russia is also struggling as the number of reported cases falls just behind the U.S. Ramy Inocencio looks at how countries are battling the global pandemic.

Origins of COVID-19 still unclear

Members of the U.S. intelligence community remain divided over the origins of COVID-19. According to a report released Friday by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, there are two likely sources. The virus either came from an infected animal or a lab. Dr. Stanley Perlman, a professor of microbiology and immunology at the University of Iowa and a pediatric infectious diseases physician, joins CBSN's Lana Zak to discuss the report's findings and more.
