It's gone from bad to worse. A massive sinkhole has turned from traffic nightmare to sickening situation in Brooklyn. A sewer main broke more than two months ago in Bay Ridge, creating a huge hole in the street.
Crews had been working nearly around-the-clock to repair the 20-foot crater that opened on 79th Street in Bay Ridge on Wednesday.
Police told 1010 WINS that they believe that the same suspect who murdered Kadare also killed a Bay Ridge shopkeeper on July 6. The suspect description is similar, and ballistics tests confirm that the same .22-caliber gun was used in both murders.
A 20-foot section of pavement on 79th Street in Bay Ridge opened up Wednesday leaving a huge sinkhole and nearly swallowing a car.
The 20-foot-deep by 20-foot-wide hole, which occurred around 6 p.m., is located between 4th and 5th avenues in the Bay Ridge.
"I thought I heard thunder, but it wasn't thunder, something was like falling," one neighbor said. "A fireman said, 'You have to get out, we're going to evacuate the building.'"
The fire broke out shortly before 3:30 a.m. at a home on 81st Street and Ridge Boulevard in Bay Ridge and quickly spread to a second house.
Some residents living along Third Avenue and Ridge Boulevard in Bay Ridge woke up Sunday to find swastikas etched backwards into the hoods of their cars.
Just before 9 p.m., 33-year-old Amjad Barakat was crossing against the light at 72nd Street and Seventh Avenue in Bay Ridge when the car, described as a tan or beige Crown Victoria or Grand Marquis, hit him and kept going, police said.
