Rather than budget cuts, a blizzard fiasco and the need to dump his schools chancellor, Mayor Michael Bloomberg had good news on Wednesday: he said the air is cleaner in Times Square since he banned cars.
Having turned Times Square, Union Square and Herald Square into pedestrian malls, the plan would have turned the 34th Street plaza into a large pedestrian mall, with cars and trucks banned between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.
Part of West 34th Street in Manhattan has reopened after police shut it down Monday afternoon. The street was closed at 1:30 p.m. between Fifth and Ninth avenues.
