NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announces transition committees

New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced Monday the creation of 17 transition advisory committees made up of more than 400 people to help advise his incoming administration on policy and appointments, and to help him chart a new course for city government.

Mamdani held a news conference Monday with some of the people he hopes will bring new energy and ideas to city government which he says he feels has grown sluggish and stagnant.

"New Yorkers have placed a great deal of hope and expectation in this new course that they have elected us to chart. It is a hope that City Hall can deliver results that make material, tangible changes in the lives of working people across these five boroughs," Mamdani said.

Experienced government veterans and insiders like Rodney Harrison, Kathy Wylde, Dan Nigro, Ruth Messinger and more have all agreed to serve on these committees, among many others.

2 new transition committees to send a message to his base

The Mamdani team will have the expected committees on transportation and public safety, for example, but he will also have two committees that have not been part of other mayoral transitions, including one on worker justice and another on community organizing.

"These are two critical parts of what it means to be a New Yorker today. We have workers across the city who have to deal with conditions that should frankly ashame us," Mamdani said.

Professor J.C. Polanco of the University of Mt. Saint Vincent said the two committees also show his base, the Democratic Socialists of America, that he is still committed to the ideals that got him elected, especially after asking Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain at the NYPD, and finding common ground with President Trump

"If you are a card-carrying member of the DSA, you're concerned today that maybe the guy that rose to the mayor's position with your support is turning on you. So it's important that he says to them, I'm still one of you, I got your back," Polanco said.

Mamdani said 70,000 people have submitted resumes to join his administration. He said there are 17,000 vacancies in city government at the moment because nobody wanted them.

Mamdani said his government would show "the importance of turning what people say no to into that which they say how to."

Among those vacancies:

  • The NYPD has about 2,600 open spots
  • The Department of Education needs about 2,500 teachers
  • There are 1,600 openings in the Correction Department

"A love for hard work, a deep belief in the promise of New York City, and a commitment to the affordability agenda that New Yorkers are demanding unite the more than 400 experts we have appointed to our Transition Committees today. By helping us recruit top talent and develop smart policy, these committees will be instrumental to ensuring we hit the ground running on January 1st — and that our results align with the promises we've made," Mamdani said.

"Excellence is the guiding light driving this transition, and today's committee appointees are no exception. Together, these leaders will help prepare Mayor-elect Mamdani's administration to take on the city's toughest challenges—from housing access to emergency preparedness to the day-to-day operations of city government that must be exceptional," said Transition Executive Director Elana Leopold.

Each committee is being overseen by one of the four previously announced transition co-chairs
