Yorktown Guide Dog Organization Needs Your Vote!
Carlie, a black lab, stand calmly next to 7-year-old Evan, who's helping to train her to become an autism service dog.
At Guiding Eyes For The Blind, they've started a new program called "Heeling Autism" and now the Yorktown organization is in 6th place to win a $250,000 grant from Pepsi.
"They give the children independence, socialization skills, they give them confidence..."said Heeling Director Caroline McCabe-Sandler.
The specially trained dogs also extinguish the bolting problem that many autistic children have, tells McCabe-Sandler to WCBS 880 Reporter Catherine Cioffi.
"They are tethered to their dog and they only want to go with their dogs, giving huge relief for parents," said McCabe-Sandler.
