YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Police are investigating after a woman was shot in the head while sitting in a vehicle in Yonkers early Sunday.

Authorities say the Yonkers Police Department responded to reports of a person shot at  178 Palisades Ave. around 8:00 a.m. Responding units discovered a 29-year-old female shot inside an SUV with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. 

"I never knew her but I don't think anyone deserves that, to be honest," a man near the crime scene told 1010 WINS' Andrew Falzone. "It makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable thinking that the culprit is around and they're looking for him."

The victim was taken to a local hospital where she remains in critical condition.

Police have not released a motive as detectives from the Yonkers Police department continue to investigate the shooting.
