Pedestrian killed in Brooklyn hit-and-run involving ambulance

A pedestrian in Brooklyn was killed Thursday morning in a hit-and-run involving an ambulance.

The ambulance crew have been suspended.

The incident was caught on gas station security video. It shows an ambulance making a left turn from Avenue O onto Ocean Avenue in Midwood, striking a woman who was crossing the street.

"She was dead on the spot, I think. She was dead on the spot. I never ever see such a thing in my life, you know," one witness said.

That witness said a city bus driver tried to chase down the ambulance, but it didn't stop.

"The bus driver, he told me he see the guy, he hit the lady, then he ran [her] over and he just keep going," the witness said, "and the bus driver, he came out from the bus and he chased him. He was running, literally. He was running behind him."

When the bus driver couldn't catch up to the ambulance, he gave up and walked back, the witness said.

The 44-year-old victim was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her identity has not yet been released.

No arrests have been made at this time. Police sources said detectives considered it's possible the driver might have been unaware he struck the woman.

Maimonides Medical Center released a statement, saying, "The Maimonides family is devastated by this tragic loss. Our EMT staff who were involved in the incident have been suspended pending the outcome of the NYPD's investigation. Our heart goes out to the victim's family and friends."

In the aftermath of the incident, police officers came to the corner of Avenue O and Ocean Avenue, handing out flyers to warn drivers and pedestrians of the dangers. Neighbors were reminded that 1 in 4 pedestrian deaths and injuries involve turning vehicles.

The investigation is ongoing.
