Arrest announced in killing of woman in NYC's Central Park

The NYPD has made an arrest in the case of a woman found dead inside Central Park on Sunday morning.

Police say officers responding to a 911 call about an unconscious person discovered the 63-year-old victim at a gazebo near East Drive and 74th Street with trauma to her head.

EMS pronounced her dead at the scene. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

The NYPD has not yet released the victim's identity, pending notification of her family.

Police on Sunday night announced the arrest of 36-year-old Jonathan Robles of Manhattan on charges of murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police said a motive is not yet clear.

CBS News New York spoke with one man in the park who said he knew the woman and that she would often stay in the gazebo.

"You come any time and she's there. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Like I said, she was a sweet woman," Moses Diaz said.

"Oh my gosh, that's terrible," another park goer said. "Just terrible news. I feel really bad for the person, and this is usually a very safe area here, so it's really sad to hear something violent like that would happen around here."

"It's terrifying," Brooks Huston added. "I think of the park as a very safe place, any time of the day or night. So, it's absolutely terrifying. My heart goes out to her family and friends. It's just gruesome and it breaks my heart."
