Pope Francis' Friday Schedule In New York City

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — Pope Francis is traveling throughout the city Friday bringing throngs of onlookers, many road closures and mass transit disruptions in Manhattan.

The pope landed at JFK just after 5 p.m. Thursday followed by the leading of evening prayers spoken in Spanish and English at St. Patrick's Cathedral.

During Pope Francis' visit to New York City, there will be a number of street closures and anticipated traffic delays in the area of Central Park West, East Harlem, Financial District, Midtown, Madison Square Garden, and the Upper East Side. "There will be some inconveniences today and please take mass transit or walk if you have the option to, but it's worth it," Mayor Bill de Blasio told 1010 WINS. "It is going to uplift us all, it is going to inspire us all so it's worth it all to have him here in our presence."

On Friday, the pope addressed the United Nations General Assembly at 10 a.m. After that, he took part in a multireligious service at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at 11:30 a.m.

The pope then visited Our Lady Queen of Angels School in East Harlem at 4 p.m.

At 5 p.m., he started his travel by motorcade through Central Park's West Drive between 72nd and 60th Street. A ticket and valid ID is required for entrance.

His day will culminate with a 6 p.m. Mass at Madison Square Garden. Pope Francis' visit to New York City will end Saturday morning at 8:40 a.m., when he will fly to Philadelphia.

  • 10:30 a.m. — Mass held at Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul
  • 4:45 p.m. — Visit to Independence Mall in Philadelphia
  • 7:30 p.m. — Visits the Festival of Families on Benjamin Franklin Parkway

Sunday

  • 9:15 a.m. — Meeting with bishops at St. Martin's Chapel, St. Charles Borromeo Seminary
  • 11 a.m. — Visits the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility
  • 4 p.m. –Mass concludes World Meeting of Families  Benjamin Franklin Parkway
  • 8 p.m. –- Departs for Rome
