WCBS 880's Sean Adams reports

That's the penalty he paid in protest for allegedly not paying his Suffern property taxes.

But Alpert has never been late in 20 years. He claims he hand delivered the check June 11.

"This is absurd because I paid my taxes," Alpert told WCBS 880 reporter Sean Adams. "I showed them my checkbook, where it has the check registered very clearly pointing out not only the amounts that I paid in June, but also the bill rate."

Suffern mayor Dagan LaCorte says, "We're sympathetic to Mr. Alpert's situation and, while we would like to help him, the unfortunate fact is he didn't ask for a receipt."

Four other Suffern residents are in the same predicament, but they mailed their checks.

The village says they were never delivered. The local postmaster bristles at that suggestion.
