7 Hurt, 2 Arrested During Fight Outside Washington Heights High School

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Washington Heights high school held an emergency meeting after police said seven teens were hurt during a street brawl outside the school.

A fighting involving nearly 50 teens broke out outside the City College Academy for the Arts, 4600 Broadway, during dismissal Monday afternoon, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

Two arrests were made, police said.

It's unclear how many of those involved in the fight are students at the school.

Parents and nearby residents are demanding answers, but Ruth told 1010 WINS' Roger Stern that they were separated into small groups after screaming and yelling broke out.

"There was a lot of screaming and chaos upstairs, and nobody was doing anything. Nobody was being heard," she said.

Another parent said she got some information on how the brawl began.

"There were kids from another school who came here because they had a problem with maybe some kids from this school," she said.

She said nothing was mentioned about what would be done to prevent Monday's melee from happening again.

The Department of Education said the safety and security of students and staff is its top priority, and it will continue working with police to make every school building safe.
