Vigil Held For Buffalo State Student Who Died Due To Possible Frat Hazing Incident
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- Candlelight in Canarsie helped relatives, classmates and neighbors honor the memory of a 21-year-old college student whose life was full of athletic achievement and whose death is full of mystery.
Bradley Doyley Jr. was at Buffalo State and pledging with the Alpha Fi Alpha fraternity when he died, CBS2's Dave Carlin reported.
The exact cause of death is unknown but the investigation has not ruled out hazing as a possible motive. Toxicology results that could answer certain key questions are not back.
Doyley's eldest sister, Shernette Doyley, helped lead a March from the family's Canarsie home on 81st Street to a neighborhood park where Doyley so often played basketball.
Some of the relatives invited to speak found it painful putting their feelings into words right now.
He was a hero to his 6-year-old niece Crystal. Crystal called him her "best uncle."
Shernette said her brother was a very friendly, loving, and respectful individual.
Leaders of the fraternity Doyley was pledging said the they do not condone any illegal activities including hazing. The frat is suspended.
At the park, his aunt Jean Pickering made a plea. She hopes it will resonate at all universities.
"The children are going off to college and living in dorms. There needs to be more supervision, there should be awareness of what's going on on the campuses because there are activities that are putting the children at risk," Pickering said.
The releasing of dozens of balloons reminded some of how the young man lifted himself to greatness on the basketball court and in college.
Taken too soon, they vow to press for answers and keep his memory alive long after they get them.
