High Wind Warning Issued For Much Of Tri-State Area
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York City Department of Buildings is warning crane operators, contractors and property owners about high winds that could create hazardous conditions this weekend.
A high wind warning is in effect from midnight Saturday until 2 p.m. Sunday for New York City, Long Island, the lower Hudson Valley and parts of New Jersey. Wind advisories are also in effect for parts of Connecticut.
CHECK: Forecast & Alerts
Forecasters say wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour overnight will transition to sustained 25 to 35 mile per hour winds with gusts up to 60 by Sunday morning.
As a precaution, the city's DOB is reminding all builders, contractors and property owners to secure their construction sites and buildings. All cranes operations must also stop and cranes must be secured by Saturday afternoon.
It says it will be performing random inspections of sites across the city.
The National Weather Service also warns that other impacts from the weekend's high winds could include downed trees and power lines, scattered power outages and difficulty driving high-profile vehicles.
In New Jersey, PSE&G said it is getting ready to deal with possible outages due to the storm.
"We take every storm with the potential for outages seriously and have additional personnel scheduled and on standby, with auxiliary equipment at the ready," John Latka, senior vice president of electric and gas operations for PSE&G, said in a statement. "Strong winds can make it difficult for our trucks to get around, and our crews can't go up in buckets to make repairs until the winds subside. Should there be outages, please know that we will restore customers as quickly and safely as possible."
It turns colder Saturday night with a couple of showers, mixing with wet snow late.
