Court Street Grocers specializes in interesting imported groceries, and killer freshly made sandwiches. Recently spotted there was the Catskill Roast Pork--tamarind pork loin with duck sauce--and an amazing Reuben made on Orwasher's bread. Head to the back counter to place your sandwich order before setting up shop in their comfy dining room.

Frankies 457 specializes in fresh, seasonal food, using a number of local purveyors, but that doesn't mean that a meal there costs a fortune. Generous sandwiches and bowls of soup can be had for less than $12, while entrees will run you a little more. You'll want to get there before the weather turns to enjoy their spacious backyard.

Buttermilk Channel maybe named for the channel between Governors Island and Brooklyn, but they know their patrons are expecting buttermilk-laden meals. For the frugal-minded, it's better to stop by for brunch instead of dinner, when you can get the same quality food for a few dollars cheaper. Or stop by on Monday nights when they run a $25 three-course dinner special which includes their famous buttermilk fried chicken and cheddar waffles.

502 Court Street

The exterior of Le Petit Cafe makes you think that all that lies inside is a small bistro cafe, but that would be wrong. Ask to be seated in the back, an area transformed into an indoor patio garden and perfect during cold winter days. They do have a classic bistro menu--hamburgers, salads, etc--where an evening meal never gets above $20 per person.

Abilene is a dive bar serving up great Tex-Mex bar food. Feel free to play a few board games--they're located in the back--while munching on $10 quesadillas and $12 platters complete with rice and beans. Of course, they have a good brunch menu filled with Texan favorites like huevos rancheros to help you get over your hangover.
