Sweeny Says: Hearing From Jorge

This past Saturday night in New Rochelle, Jorge Posada was the guest of honor at Bernie Williams' annual fundraising event to benefit the Hillside Food Outreach, feeding nearly 1,000 hungry families in Westchester and Putnam Counties. Visit to donate and get some autographed merchandise from Bernie.

Posada, who has been spending his winter in sunny Miami, came up to the cold and snow to help his old friend and teammate. It was also the first time this off-season Posada has had the opportunity to publicly address his new role as full-time DH.

As part of the event, I had the privilege of hosting a Q &A with the two Yankee greats. I began by asking Posada about his meeting with Brian Cashman last fall when he was told of his transition from catcher to DH…

Posada said he thinks Jesus Montero is ready to hit in the big leagues, but it is still to be seen if he is ready to catch in the big leagues every day.

Posada's good friend Derek Jeter has had an interesting off-season too. Posada thinks anyone who counts Jeter out in 2011 is mistaken.

The "Jeter to the outfield" story was somewhat overplayed after Brian Cashman's comments at the WFAN sponsored breakfast last week, but it's now a topic nonetheless. Who better to ask about Jeter's ability to switch to the outfield—if it came to that—than Bernie Williams…

Bernie admitted it was a "touchy subject" and didn't elaborate beyond this. However, both Williams and Posada addressed the issue of being phased out, something Williams went through during and after the 2006 season and something Posada is going through now, with Jeter doing so to a much lesser degree. But it's something that many star players find themselves facing as they get older. Both Williams and Posada discussed their feelings of going through it…

In regards to Andy Pettitte, another member of The Core whose future is uncertain, Posada he has called and texted him many times this off-season, but only about non-baseball things, allowing Pettitte the space he needs to make a personal decision. Asked for his gut feeling, Posada said he thought Pettitte would pitch this year.

The conversation then turned to more fun topics, and both Posada and Williams entertained the crowd with stories beyond the box scores. Listen here as I tried to get each guy to tell us something we didn't know about the other…

Later, I tried to get the definitive word on a legendary tale from the old Yankee Stadium, a ball that Bernie Williams supposedly hit completely out of the park during batting practice several years ago…

Over the last few years I've had the privilege of hosting a Q & A at the Hillside Food Outreach benefit with stars such as Paul O'Neill, Robinson Cano, and Joe Girardi. The special bond shared between these two Yankee greats made this one of the most entertaining events I've ever had the pleasure of being part of.

Special thanks go out to all those who made it a successful night.
