Suffolk County Names Its First Muslim Police Chaplain

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) – The Suffolk County police department named its first Muslim police chaplain ever this week.

Nayyar Imam took on the role and called his new position an honor.

"This is a blessing. It could be a bridge between the Muslim community and law enforcement, which is very necessary. It's a need of the time," he said.

Imam said he knows the expectations are high and urges anyone with questions concerning the Muslim community to just ask.

"Talk to the people if you have any concern. Just don't assume yourself if there's something wrong with this community," he said.

In a first of its kind, Imam said he was "very humble to accept this position" for Suffolk County.
