John 'Junior' Gotti Stabbed In CVS Parking Lot In Syosset

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- John "Junior" Gotti is recovering after being stabbed in a parking lot on Long Island. But his story to investigators is leaving room for doubt, CBS 2's Dave Carlin reported.

Gotti told Nassau police he was in the parking lot of a CVS pharmacy in Syosset at around 9:45 p.m. Sunday, when he witnessed two people arguing, CBS 2's Carolyn Gusoff reported.

While trying to break up the fight, Gotti told police he got in the middle of the strangers and was stabbed in the stomach.

Store employees, however, told Carlin that they didn't notice anything out of the ordinary in the parking lot at the time of the alleged incident and found no physical evidence or security camera footage that supported Gotti's story. Police and prosecutors say after telling that initial story, Gotti stopped cooperating.

CBS 2 repeatedly reached out to Gotti's attorney, who said he was looking in to the matter.

Gotti drove himself to Syosset Hospital. Apparently, his wound was so severe, he had to go to North Shore University Hospital, Gusoff reported.

Gotti's wound is not life-threatening, sources told Gusoff. Sources told CBS 2 that Gotti is recovering at his home in Oyster Bay Cove.

Earlier Monday, shoppers said Gotti is an average guy and a good neighbor.

"He probably saw something going on. this kind of guy is always the underdog trying to save the week," Marcello Caccialino said.

Gotti, 49, is the son of the late, legendary Gambino crime family leader, John "Dapper Don" Gotti.
