After Unseasonably Warm Start To Season, Cold Weather Sets In

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Snow is in store Sunday afternoon.

Areas to the north and west of Interstate 287 can expect to see 3 to 6 inches of accumulation, while others will see anywhere from 3 inches, to a coating, to rain.

New York City's Department of Sanitation issued a "snow alert" for Sunday as well.

Temperatures fell below freezing across the Tri-State Area on Friday night for the first time since last winter.

While the cold weather shouldn't come as a surprise in December, it has been a shock to the system after such an unseasonably warm start to the season.

"I'm so freezing. I don't know why it's so cold," a shivering 5-year-old told 1010 WINS' Samantha Liebman.

Despite the frigid temperatures, families flocked to the winter wonderland in Brookville Park in Brooklyn on Saturday to enjoy the outdoor rides and games.

"Just wear a jacket," one young girl said.

"I'm wearing three pants and two shirts," a boy said.

Many parents said if it weren't for the event, they would have stayed inside, but it's good to get out of the house.

Meanwhile in New Jersey, residents in Metuchen saw flakes fly.
