Family Demands Justice For Bodega Worker Killed By Cop's Bullet
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A family marched for justice on Monday night, 3 years after Reynaldo Cuevas, 20, was killed outside of a Bronx bodega.
Police said the deadly bullet was accidentally discharged from an officer's weapon.
As CBS2's Jessica Schneider reported, the family is still looking for answers.
Their voices were loud and strong, years after a frantic dash for help ended the life of Cuevas.
"It gives you goose bumps, because you're standing where he got killed," Reynaldo's sister Nicole said.
On September 7, 2012, Cuevas was working inside a bodega on Franklin Ave when three men stormed in the front door, hit the night manager in the head with a gun, and shoved Cuevas to the ground.
When police responded to the robbery in progress the trio of robbers ran to the back and the night manager ran out the front with his hands up. When Cuevas ran out after him he collided with Officer Ramsyh Bangali.
The men fell to the ground and Officer Bangali's gun accidentally discharged. Cuevas was shot and killed.
"The robbers didn't pull the trigger on my brother, it was a police officer who did," Nicole said.
Officer Bangali still works for the NYPD, though he is no longer in the 42nd Precinct. Police officials cleared him of any wrongdoing and he faced no disciplinary action.
"Today is Labor Day and unfortunately somebody who was working hard and trying to better himself and his family is dead at the hands of a New York City police officer," Cuevas family attorney Robinson Iglesias said.
The family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit, but it's been on hold while the criminal case against the three accused robbers moves forward.
"It gets me angry that no justice has been served and it's 3 years now," Nicole said.
The Cuevas family plans to keep fighting.
