Rep. Jim Himes Praises Program To Ease Soldiers' Transition Back To Homefront

HARTFORD, CT (WCBS 880) - With a high unemployment rate nationwide, returning veterans face a huge challenge joining the workforce.

WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau On The Story

Connecticut U.S. Rep. Jim Himes is pleased with a passage of a bill that will help ease the transition.

"Lots of our soldiers have skills that are very applicable in the civilian world," he told WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau, noting that, in many cases, certification or college courses are required.

The bill helps pay for this.

He says the measure is built in the tradition of the G.I. Bill for the returning veterans of World War II.

Himes notes that the unemployment rate for returning soldiers is substantially higher than the average nationwide and that this bill builds on the skills soldiers learn overseas.
