Every week, we'll rank the best players in local sports history by uniform/jersey number, in sets of 10. So with that said, let's start from the top. Here are 99-90:
99: Wayne Gretzky, Rangers
No offense to Mark Gastineau, but Gretzky is arguably the greatest to ever play his sport. As for Turk Wendell, well, he never stood a chance.
98: Jessie Armstead, Giants
A five-time Pro Bowler, he helped the Giants get to the Super Bowl in 2000.
97: Calvin Pace, Jets
A big part of the Jets' defense that led the team to back-to-back AFC Championship Games.
96: Muhammad Wilkerson, Jets
Has proven himself on the football field right from the get-go, and will only get better and better.
95: Rick Lyle, Jets
Started 67 straight regular-season and playoff games for the Jets from 1997-2001.
94: John Abraham, Jets
A member of the 100 Sacks Club and a five-time Pro Bowler. An outstanding defensive player.
93: Marty Lyons, Jets
Part of the famous (or infamous) "New York Sack Exchange" that terrorized quarterbacks and offensive lines.
92: Michael Strahan, Giants
Had the most sacks in a single season in NFL history. He was selected to seven Pro Bowls and finished off his career with a Super Bowl championship (2007). Not bad.
91: John Tavares, Islanders
One of the best players in the NHL already, and he still hasn't reached his ceiling. Scary to think about.
90: Jason Pierre-Paul
A two-time Pro Bowler, he helped the Giants win a Super Bowl in 2012. Was a major factor on that championship team.
