Rahway Church Not Letting Ceiling Collapse Deter Services

RAHWAY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A ceiling collapse at a New Jersey church was not enough to stop members of two congregations from holding services this weekend.

The Elim United Methodist Church, a Korean congregation, and the Spanish Manantial de Vida Church held services outside in Rahway on Sunday.

Last Sunday, members of the Manantial de Vida Church were celebrating Easter when debris rained down on them from above.

Between 75 and 100 people were in the 1850s-era church at the time of the collapse. Many were young children.

In total, 14 people were hurt. One of which suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Cellphone video showed debris all over the pews after a huge section of the ceiling came crashing down at the church on West Grand Avenue.

Fire officials told Gannett New Jersey that the collapse could have been caused by structural failure. The building has been condemned by the city, Gannett New Jersey reported.

The Korean congregation's leader said both groups also have found temporary homes.
