Raging Fire Damages Several Atlantic City Buildings

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Firefighters battled a multialarm blaze that damaged several buildings in Atlantic City just steps from the resort town's boardwalk.

The buildings, on the 1100 block of Atlantic Avenue, caught fire late Tuesday night and burned into early Wednesday before finally being extinguished. The street is about a block from the boardwalk.

The fire started at a consignment shop and spread to three other buildings, two of which suffered partial collapses, fire officials said.

The Red Cross is helping 17 people who were displaced by the blaze.

At least one family of six has been displaced but that no one has been injured, officials said.

Mayor Don Guardian expressed thanks that residents were able to escape the flames and smoke.
