Teen killed, another injured when moped crashes into open car door in Queens

A 13-year-old boy was killed and another teenager was hurt when the moped they were on crashed into an open driver's side door on a street in New York City on Monday afternoon.

The latest on the investigation

The NYPD said the teen operating the moped tried swerving to avoid hitting a parked black SUV's door on 162nd Street in Flushing, Queens, at around 12:30 p.m., but lost control.

The passenger suffered fatal injuries when he fell off the bike and made contact with a truck that was also traveling southbound on 162nd, police said. The 13-year-old who was driving was hospitalized.

Surveillance video shows a car parking moments before the teens crash into the door as it is being opened.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been made.

Witnesses left shaken by accident

Shop owner Joe Mah saw the aftermath of the accident.

"I see the bike lay down under the truck. I feel bad. I feel sad," Mah said.

The crash happened in front of several neighborhood businesses, leaving witnesses and families shaken.

"I feel upset for them. I'm very shocked. I don't know how to say, but I feel really really upset for that," parent Yvette Zaeng said.

Zaeng, who has an 11-year-old daughter, said seeing the site serves as a reminder of how dangerous city streets can be.

"When I cross street I always tell my daughter, 'Hold my hand.' She's 11 and [sometimes] she says 'No, no, no,' but I say, 'Hold my hand.' I always watch her," she said.
