Experts: Homeowners Can Reap Rewards By Challenging Property Tax Assessments
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- It is nearing a season that many people in the Tri-State Area dread, property tax assessment time.
As CBS2's Jennifer McLogan explained, homeowners can challenge the system and reap rewards.
On Long Island, some people with looming deadlines to fight inequities are petitioning to be heard.
Experts say 60 percent of homes are assessed at a higher amount than their current value.
Homeowners can contest assessment and file property tax grievances.
"The best way to lower your property taxes is to grieve. You have to be your own advocate," Paola Orsini said.
Orsini is President of Reassessment and Evaluation Services on Long Island.
She suggested signing up for a conference with your county, checking for mistakes, and investigating.
Some homeowners are paying far more than neighbors whose houses are of similar quality.
Data collection and entry errors many times mean lesser valued property owners are subsidizing the rich ones.
"If you are over-assessed and can prove your case, you get your taxes reduced. Anywhere from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars," Orsini said.
If you feel you have been over assessed, file the forms online, and hire a company or a lawyer.
"I think it's great. I grieve my taxes each year and I encourage every resident to do that in Nassau County, because the point is, there are a number of great exemptions" Kate Murray said.
There may be exemptions for home improvement, senior citizens, veterans, and star programs.
Some who fought back are now satisfied.
Rising tax bills don't have to mean angst and appeals. All it requires is a little research, communication, and patience.
Not every appeal will be successful, but experts say a well researched case boosts the odds. For many the deadline is May 19.
