Port Authority Opens First Platform At New WTC PATH Station

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey is marking the opening of the first platform at the new World Trade Center PATH station.

Platform A, which serves Hoboken, is fully modernized and features new lighting, speakers, illuminated signs, escalators and elevators.

As WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported, Hoboken-bound commuters got a treat Tuesday morning.

"It's gorgeous. It looks a little futuristic. I'm happy to be one of the first riders, it was really unexpected," one commuter said.

The platform features marble floors, glass elevators and a multicolored mosaic designed in Italy, Diamond reported.

Part of the World Trade Center's original slurry wall also made it to the new $50 million platform.

Officials said this is another major milestone in the construction of the PATH train station.

"We have really turned the corner and over the next two to three years, we'll continue to open wonderful structures such as this," Steve Plake, lead engineer of World Trade Center construction, told Diamond.

The $4 billion transportation hub will continue to open in phases through 2015.
