Police Search For Window-Smashing Burglary Suspect In SoHo, UES Incidents
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police on Wednesday were asking for help in finding a suspect in a string of burglaries around Manhattan – from SoHo to the Upper East Side.
The incidents go back to New Year's Day, police said. The suspect has smashed windows with heavy metal garbage cans and other objects at an assortment of shops, and has sometimes stolen items but has sometimes apparently left without taking anything, police said.
The burglaries happened at the following times at locations:
• Around 6 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, at 143 Prince St. in SoHo. The suspect threw a metal garbage can through the window and took several handbags, police said.
• Around 2:10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, at 139 Spring St. in SoHo. The suspect again threw a metal garbage can through the window, but left without taking anything, police said.
• Around 4 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, again at 139 Spring St. in SoHo. Police responded to the location for a commercial burglar alarm and found a window broken again, but nothing was taken.
• Around 4:15 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at 645 Madison Ave. on the Upper East Side. An employee heard glass break and went to the front of the store to find a large hole in the window and a fur coat removed from a mannequin, police said.
• At 4:16 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at 870 Madison Ave. on the Upper East Side. An employee responded after a burglar alarm went off, and found a window broken and two handbags missing from a display.
• Around 4:40 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at 1 E. 57th St. in Midtown. A front window was found to be broken, but nothing was taken.
• At 3:23 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, at 660 Madison Ave. on the Upper East Side. A man swung a heavy object at a window and ran off without taking anything.
• Around 4:04 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, at 655 Fifth Ave. in Midtown. An employee found a window broken and two handbags missing.
Police have a photo of the suspect from two of the incidents.
