The shooting happened just after 4 a.m. at the Knight's Inn on Spring Street near Newark Liberty Airport.

Authorities said officers confronted 25-year-old Jahind Davis and 18-year-old Jaquil Spruill, who had allegedly broken into two rooms. They also robbed and beat a man, authorities said.

Bonnie Rosario was staying in one of the rooms when she said two men attacked her friend.

"I was under the table...this one's got the gun and hitting him and this guy's kicking him in the head like 10, 15 times," Rosario explained to 1010 WINS' Steve Sandberg.

Investigators said it remained unclear whether the suspect shot before police opened fire.

Medical officials pronounced Davis dead at Trinitas Hospital.  Spruill was taken to University Hospital where he is listed in critical condition. No officer was hurt.

The case is still under investigation.
