NYPD Receiving Award For Haiti Training Assistance
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The NYPD is being recognized for its role in providing police training assistance in Haiti.
The law enforcement agency will receive the first State Department Excellence in Overseas Criminal Justice Assistance Award on Monday.
It is given in recognition of its contribution to the State Department's efforts "to strengthen the rules of law and enhance U.S. diplomacy in Haiti.''
New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly will receive the award on behalf of the department in a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Since the 2010 earthquake, the NYPD has supported 12 deployments to Haiti, sending 68 Creole-speaking officers to train and mentor Haitian police officers. They've been providing training in conducting investigations, anti-kidnapping strategies and general policing support.
"The NYPD's efforts have promoted the rule of law and improved Haitian National Police capacities in areas such as patrol and investigations," the State Department said.
The costs of the NYPD assistance are reimbursed by the State Department.
