NYC Sues Westchester County For Poaching Rookie NYPD Officer
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York City has filed a lawsuit against Westchester County, demanding the county reimburse the city for NYPD training costs after city police officers were allegedly poached by Westchester county police departments.
New York City is demanding more than $20,000 in training costs for NYPD officer Jerome Schulman.
Kieran O'Leary, of the Westchester County Public Safety Department, said officer Schulman began working for the county in 2014 -- before he completed three years of service with the NYPD, WCBS 880's Stephanie Colombini reported. Schulman was hired by the NYPD in 2012.
NYC filed another lawsuit against Mt. Pleasant earlier this week, demanding reimbursements of more than $47,000 for training expenses for John Kardian, another NYPD officer.
According to O'Leary, the city is entitled to recover some training costs under state law in this circumstance.
"But we do have a difference of opinion regarding the amount that New York City is seeking, so that continues to be a matter of negotiation," O'Leary said.
According to The Journal News, New York City currently has eight lawsuits pending in several counties, including Westchester, Rockland, Nassau and Suffolk.
The Westchester County Law Department is handling all negotiations.
