The department is trying to recruit people for its overseas operations.
Spokesman Paul Browne quotes commissioner Ray Kelly as saying that these officers will be operating in other countries to ask the "New York question." That is, 'How does what happened here affect New York City?'
Browne says the department is not looking to enlarge the program; these new cops would replace officers returning stateside.
He says their work has proved vital.
"We learn immediately what the modus operandi and we can take precautions in New York. Sometimes, like in advance of our own rush hour, the same day because of the time difference," Browne told WCBS 880 reporter Paul Murnane on Friday.
The officers are in direct, and daily, contact with their New York supervisors.
Browne says second language skills and a self starter attitude are pluses.
