NYPD Launches 2-Week Bicycle Safety Crackdown

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The NYPD on Wednesday began a crackdown on traffic violations committed by bicyclists on the roads.

Operation Safe Cycle – a two week bicycle safety operation – will run two weeks through Tuesday, Aug. 26, the NYPD said in a news release.

The crackdown will target violations that endanger both bicyclists and pedestrians, including running red lights, disobeying other traffic signals or signs, riding in the wrong direction against traffic, riding on the sidewalk, and failing to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk, police said.

The crackdown will also target drivers who interfere with cyclists' progress by blocking bike lanes, police said.

The NYPD asked that everyone bicycling and driving in the city make safety a priority.
