NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP/CBS 2/1010 WINS) — The helmets of high school football players around New Jersey will feature the number of paralyzed Rutgers player Eric LeGrand.
Riddell is distributing the oval No. 52 decals in scarlet numerals without charge to approximately 150 high schools, as well as Kean and William Paterson universities.
The concept started at LeGrand's alma mater, Colonia High School.
"It's overwhelming," Ben LaSala, head coach of Colonia High School told 1010 WINS. "What a great show of being together."
Riddell's central Jersey sales representative Mike Frauenheim told The Home News Tribune of East Brunswick each decal equals one prayer from the individual wearing the sticker.
Riddell will send "memo invoices" to schools if they want to make donations that will go toward a fund for LeGrand.
The junior remains paralyzed from the neck down after he made a tackle on a kickoff return against Army last Saturday.
