NEW YORK -- A National First Responders Day ceremony was held Tuesday in Times Square.

The event was organized by the First Responders Children's Foundation.

It featured a roll call of heroes from across the country for their heroism and acts of service in helping the public.

NYPD Lieutenant Julieann Stapleton was awarded the Community Hero Award.

"Lieutenant Stapleton became the founder of the Superwomen Project, a group that supports women in law enforcement and promotes mental health support and prevents suicide. This project has become truly powerful, creating a network of women who realize the value not only in themselves, but in others," Times Square Alliance President Tom Harris said.

The First Responders Children's Foundation was founded after 9/11 when 800 children lost a first responder parent.
