Masterpieces And Mementos Owned By Lauren Bacall To Go Up For Auction

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Artwork belonging to the late Lauren Bacall is about to go up for auction, offing an opportunity for many to fill their homes with treasures from a Hollywood star.

As CBS2's Jill Nicolini reported, Bacall was known for her sultry and distinctive voice during the Golden Age of motion pictures.

She passed away last year at the age of 89, and now her extensive collection of masterpieces and mementos are on display at Bonhams Madison Avenue galleries.

"Lauren Bacall collected things because they spoke to her, they meant something to her," said Jon King, vice president of business development at Bonhams. "She didn't collect because of monetary value. You'll find things everywhere from $100 to $100,000."

More than 740 lots are up for auction, which comprises about 2,000 individual objects from works of art -- both prints and paintings -- to over 3,000 books, to furniture, china, sculptures, clothing and jewelry, Nicolini reported.

"The two gold bracelets are by Schlumberger. The interesting thing is, she wore the together on the same wrist," said King. "She was one of the first to actually layer jewelry."

Most of the items on display are from Bacall's 4,000-square-foot apartment. The Dakota, which has nine rooms, four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, overlooks Central Park.

Currently, the fourth-floor apartment is on the market for $26 million, Nicolini reported.

Bacall collected items from around the world and a few of them graced her home in Los Angeles when she was married to Humphrey Bogart.

For $50 you can purchase a 347 page catalog and admission into the preview for two -- a collector's item in its own right, containing all auction items and vintage photographs of Bacall, Nicolini reported.

The preview runs through March 30, then the auction will be held on the following two days.
