Lunch Break: Cool Cafes & Ale Houses

Enjoy your lunch at one of these cool cafes, or perhaps a West Village ale house, in today's New York Lunch Break. By Yvo Sin.

Maybelle Cafe

502 Henry St
Brooklyn, NY 11231
(718) 596-3400

If ever there were a place to dine daily, Maybelle Cafe would be it. Effusively friendly service, it's almost impossible to not want to be a regular here; the simple menu offers soups, salads and sandwiches to make anyone happy (including the vegans! with a vegan BLT or vegan tofu salad sandwiches), but hearty enough to fill even the biggest eater. The strawberry vinaigrette for your salad is particularly nice on any of the salads, brightening your plate with a summery taste. Didn't get what you wanted today? That's okay; you'll be back tomorrow.

Blind Tiger Ale House

281 Bleecker St
New York, NY 10014
(212) 462-4682

Blind Tiger Ale House boasts a wide selection of fantastic beers, and a relatively well-rounded menu of pub grub to make even the most discerning beer drinker happy. Sandwiches and bar snacks share the spotlight: try the deviled eggs (pictured), which go well with a cold beer to wash it all down. The beer-brined chicken wings are also worth a second look - for the spice lovers, try the hot ones, but be sure to have a beer on hand to tame that heat!

Union Square Cafe

21 E 16th St
New York, NY 10003
(212) 243-4020
unionsquarecafe.com

Danny Meyer's flagship restaurant - the house that hospitality built, if you will - sits off of Union Square, beckoning any who would enjoy being treated like a VIP to enter. The service here is impeccable, the restaurant's reputation having been built on such things; the food is above average cafe quality and well deserving of its slightly higher than most cafes price tag. The warm garlic potato chips will have you craving a bowlful during your next TV night, while the BLT will make you wonder if you've ever really had a BLT in the past. No matter; at the end of lunch, float back out into the world knowing you just had what might just be the best meal at a cafe you've ever had.
