Police: LI Women Crash Car After Scamming Stores With Fake Money

LEVITTOWN, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Two Long Island women learned crime doesn't pay.

Sarah Abraham and Krystal Joushan went to several stores in Levittown on Wednesday and managed to either exchange fake $100 bills for real cash or use the funny money to make purchases, police said.

"One girl purchased a soda and paid for it with the fake $100 bill and received about $98 in real currency back," Detective Sgt. Richard Harrison told 1010 WINS. "The other girl went into another business and produced the fake $100 bill and asked for change back for that, which she received."

The bills had the words "For Motion Picture Use Only" printed on both sides.

"This was clearly movie prop money. It's like walking in with Monopoly money and saying, 'Here, can I get change for this Monopoly money?'" Harrison told 1010 WINS.

A store owner figured out the money was phony and tried to chase after the women, who hopped in a car and fled the scene, striking a pedestrian and parked vehicle, police said.

The pedestrian suffered a minor arm injury.

The victim, whose car was struck, followed the women's vehicle to Abraham's house at 50 Crescent Lane in Levittown, where they were placed under arrest, police said.

One of the suspects told police they purchased the fake money online.

"We went on the Internet and we were able to locate on a very reputable site that everyone uses all the time where they were selling these types of bills on there," Harrison said.

Abraham and Joushan, of Hicksville, both face two counts of petit larceny.

Joushan is also charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident.
