The crash happened around 10:20 p.m. on the Long Island Expressway near Exit 60.

The 17-year-old from Deer Park suffered a brain injury and was transported by helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said.

The driver, Robert Mangum, 21, also of Deer Park, and a passenger in the front seat were treated at the hospital and released. They were wearing their seat belts, police said.

It's not clear if Brennan was wearing his seat belt.

Mangum and his friends were coming from a car show in Farmingville, authorities said. Mangum was speeding and police are investigating whether he was racing some of the other drivers from the car show, Suffolk County police Lt. Thomas O'Hare told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to call 631-854-8452.
