NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Service on the Long Island Rail Road was suspended for a period of time Tuesday evening after a person was hit and killed by a train.

Around 5:45 p.m., a trespasser was struck near by a westbound train near Queens Village, officials told CBS2. The train had been due at Penn Station at 6:08 p.m.

The person was killed, officials said.

The LIRR was suspended in both directions between Penn Station and Jamaica after the incident, the railroad said just before 7 p.m.

By 8:10 p.m., service had resumed, but with delays averaging an hour systemwide, the LIRR said.
