Hofstra Alumni Petition For Better Security Off-Campus

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Hofstra University alumni have started a petition demanding better security for students who live off-campus.

This comes in the wake of a home invasion that ended with 21-year-old student Andrea Rebello being shot dead by a police officer.

As many as 2,000 people have already signed the petition to increase security.

"In my four years in Hofstra, I saw break-ins. I saw robberies," Cassie Goldberg, one of the alums pushing for the change, told WCBS 880 reporter Sophia Hall.

Goldberg, who graduated in 2007, said the changes include developing an off-campus registry for local landlords renting to students and increased security for off-campus housing, especially at night.

"On the other side of the metal gates of the university, it's a really bad neighborhood," she said.

"We understand that it's not the legal obligation to protect students who live off-campus, but we do believe there's more that they can be doing simply because they care about their students, whether they live on or off," she added.

Hofstra President Stuart Rabinowitz said that public safety officers have already been patrolling areas off-campus near the school and noted that the school's director of public safety used to be a chief with the Nassau County Police Department.

Also, a task force is being formed to work with the police, public safety, parents, and students to enhance safety in the area.

Rebello's funeral was held on Wednesday.
