3 Suffolk County Police Officers Pull Unconscious Woman From Burning Home

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Three Suffolk County police officers are being hailed as heroes for saving a woman from a burning home.

Neighbors stood watching helplessly as flames tore through a home on 11 8th Ave. in Brentwood at around 11:45 p.m. Thursday, CBS2's Alex Denis reported.

When Suffolk County Police Officers Jesse Zuckerman, Darrell Randolph and Ronald Racioppi responded to a 911 call and arrived at the scene, the home was engulfed in flames.

A man was yelling his wife was inside the home. That's when they ran into the burning house to save the unconscious woman's life, Denis reported.

"He was screaming in Spanish that his wife was still in the house. I speak enough Spanish to understand what he was saying," said Randolph. "We go to the front door and open it and inside we can see a female foot. "

"It was fully engulfed in smoke. We were able to see her laying on the floor," Zuckerman said. "From a distance we can see her foot. I entered the house. We were able to pull her through the front door."

They carried her to the front yard where they performed CPR and administered oxygen until the fire department arrived.

She was transported via Brentwood Ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where she is being treated for smoke inhalation.

Her son stopped by the home Friday morning and said he is thankful his mother and father are alive and recovering, Denis reported.

Neighbors share his sentiment. "They came here quickly and saved life. They did very good," said Angel Gaston.

Two additional adults and three children were also inside the home at the time of the fire. They escaped without injuries, Denis reported.

Although officials don't know the cause of the fire, they do know the officers quick thinking saved the day.
