NYC Nonprofit Prepares 4,200 Thanksgiving Meals For Chronically Ill

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Dozens of volunteers joined the kitchen staff at New York City nonprofit God's Love We Deliver on Wednesday, preparing 4,200 traditional Thanksgiving meals for chronically ill people, their caregivers and their guests.

"I love the feeling I get when I leave here," one kitchen staff member told 1010 WINS' Steve Kastenbaum. "Everyday I walk out of here knowing I fed people, I know my job touches people directly."

God's Love We Deliver provides free meals to thousands of people with chronic illnesses in New York City, Long Island and New Jersey.

"These are people who are really sick and can't take care of themselves or their families," Karen Pearl, president and CEO of God's Love We Deliver, said. "They can't shop or cook, and they're living with 200 different types of illnesses."

According to their website, the organization cooks 5,500 meals every day and has delivered more than 1.4 million meals so far this year.

Last week, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer visited the nonprofit's SoHo headquarters prepare meals.
