New York Giants fire head coach Brian Daboll
The New York Giants fired head coach Brian Daboll on Monday, a day after blowing a big second-half lead in a road loss to the Chicago Bears.
Mike Kafka will serve as interim head coach for New York, which is 2-8 and has not had a winning season since 2022, Daboll's first with the team.
"The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing"
Giants president John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch released a joint statement.
"We spoke this morning about the direction of our franchise on the field, and we have decided that, at this time, it is in our best interest to make a change at the head coaching position. The past few seasons have been nothing short of disappointing, and we have not met our expectations for this franchise. We understand the frustrations of our fans, and we will work to deliver a significantly improved product," they said. "We appreciate Coach Daboll for his contributions to our organization. We wish the Daboll family all the best in the future."
General manager Joe Schoen will remain and is heading up the search for a new head coach. The rest of Daboll's staff was kept in place, including defensive coordinator Shane Bowen.
"We feel like Joe has assembled a good young nucleus of talent, and we look forward to its development," Mara said. "Unfortunately, the results over the past three years have not been what any of us want. We take full responsibility for those results and look forward to the kind of success our fans expect."
"These are difficult decisions, and John and I do not take them lightly," Tisch added. "But we feel like this is the right thing to do at this time and will allow us to move forward."
Daboll and Schoen had been on the hot seat all season after a terrible 2024, in which the Giants finished 3-14, one of the worst records in franchise history.
Ownership opted to bring them back anyway.
Daboll, who was named NFL Coach of the Year after leading the Giants to a 9-7-1 record and a playoff win in 2022, finishes his tenure with the club with a 20-40-1 record.
