The future is uncertain for the 160 cats and 20 dogs at the Bloomingdale animal shelter. It's been flooded three times this year and is waiting for a new contract from the borough and shelter president Ellen Ribitzki says donations are down.
"Just between the economy being very, very bad, people don't have a lot of disposable income, a lot aren't working," said Ribitzki. "We're getting a lot animals turned in because the people lose their house and are foreclosed. I think what's really hurting us even more is a lot of people are reluctant to adopt because they don't know what their financial situation would be."
But there is one bit of good news for the shelter. A sweet 4-year-old pit bull named Sugar that was stolen from the shelter earlier this week has been returned safe and sound.
