Frustrated Tenants Say Rent Increases Are Forcing People From Their Homes
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Tenants and their supporters voiced their displeasure when the Rent Guidelines Board voted preliminarily for an increase of 0 to 2 percent for one-year rent-stabilized leases, or .5 to 3.5 percent for two-year leases.
"Why aren't tenants being protected rather than landlords?" Sheila Zukowski asked.
Zukowski was part of a rally calling for a rent rollback.
Frustrated Tenants Say Rent Increases Are Forcing People From Their Homes
Many say landlords are profiting while people are being priced out of their homes.
Jack Freund from the Rent Stabilization Association, representing thousands of owners, said their costs are going up every year and the board's increases don't cover them.
"Owners are behind the eight ball. They need an increase this year," he said.
The board's final vote is scheduled for late June.
