Police respond to report of assault inside deli
It happened at around 3 p.m. inside Alex Deli & Grocery, which is located at Flatbush and Newkirk avenues.
Police said officers were sent to the area in response to a 911 call about an assault inside the deli.
Witnesses in the area told CBS News New York they heard several gunshots.
"I'm concerned. I know a lot of people in the neighborhood," neighbor Sarah Dorelus said.
When officers arrived, police said they found a 24-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the face and a 26-year-old man who had been shot in the back. Both were taken to a nearby hospital and are expected to survive.
So far there's no word on what led up to the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.
United Bodegas of America call for increased safety
The shooting triggered a call to action from Fernando Mateo, a spokesperson with United Bodegas of America.
"We want a return on our dollar, and that return is public safety," he said.
He called on city leaders to step up and increase crime transparency and safety in bodegas.
"We need funding so that we can install lights, bulletproof doors, so that we can put panic buttons," Mateo said.
The shooting left some residents calling for change to help combat crime.
"We need more policing in these communities, that's what we need," one person said.
The United Bodegas Association says they're offering a $5,000 reward leading to the arrest of those responsible.
